Massive open online course (MOOC)

Definition

A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is a web-based education or training portal. As well as being simple to access- it’s open to anyone anywhere with an internet connection – MOOCs are innovative because they blend traditional text-based classroom materials with a host of multimedia content drawn from the web. This can include documentaries, podcasts, magazine and newspaper articles and interactive quizzes.

However, for a MOOC to have the greatest possible impact on learning or training outcomes, its content has to be actively curated by learning professionals and kept constantly fresh. Likewise, user feedback must be continually monitored and acted upon to strengthen learning pathways, score or rate learning materials and identify gaps where new course content is needed.
