The number of people working from home – both full-time and part-time – is growing year-over-year. According to Gallup, 43% of U.S. adults work remotely some of the time and 5% (approximately 8 million) have made the move to home working permanently.

However, as the coronavirus pandemic begins to recede, expect those numbers to shoot up and stay up. Due to social distancing measures, many of us have had little choice than to work remotely over recent weeks; while a host of companies, big and small, have discovered the business continuity planning benefits of having virtual employees, ready and willing to step into action and keep everything operational.

The result? People who are new to home working are being won over by its benefits – no commute, more time with family and casual dress code. On the business side, a number of organizations will be looking to build out virtual networks of employees in specific roles who would have traditionally been working from a physical location to increase business resiliency and improve agility.

What kind of work can I do from home?

From web developers and app designers to copy editing, translation, consulting and social media management, the number of roles that can be conducted 100% remotely is growing every day. Essentially any role that is heavily process-orientated can be conducted wherever there is a sufficiently powerful computer and strong internet connection.

However, for many of these positions, working from home is a natural progression from an existing on-site position, building up a contacts book of potential freelance clients, or the result of starting and building a business.

So, what are the real work from home jobs that anyone at any point in their career can really do with a computer, a high-speed internet connection and on-the-job training? We’ve narrowed down the list to five major positions where training is provided by the employer and where aptitude is just as important as experience or a college degree.

1. Website tester

All you need to get started as a tester is a PC equipped with a microphone and the latest version of Windows, plus a high-speed internet connection.

The microphone is important because as you work your way through a website you need to provide real-time feedback. After a test, you fill out an online survey. The whole thing should take no more than 10-20 minutes for which you could be paid up to $20, though it can vary. For example, Usertesting, one of the biggest employers in this space pays $10 for every 20 minutes worked and caps payments at $60 per test. If you also have the latest iPhone and a smartphone running the latest version of Android, you can also earn money as an app tester.

Alongside straightforward testing, a number of companies, such as Respondent also offer opportunities for people to share their opinions on web-based products and services and their design, essentially a virtual focus group.

2. Transcription

Some companies pay per audio hour, others by line and some by word typed. There are businesses out there such as TranscribeMe  who specialize in opportunities to start a career in transcription. Beginners, once they’ve passed an online test, can undertake short one-to-two minute transcriptions, such as closed captions for videos or short dictations, and then slowly work up as your confidence and skill grow. 

However, in most cases, transcriptionists are expected to have a degree in English, a computer with a foot pedal for instant pausing and resuming of an audio file and a typing speed of between 60-70 words per minute. If you’re not sure how fast or accurately you type, there are countless free online typing tests available to help you find out and improve.

Those dipping a toe into the waters of transcription services shouldn’t expect more than $200-$300 a month. This is because the best-paid work from home transcription jobs are specialized and focused on the insurance, healthcare and legal sectors. Each of which is an industry that requires large transcripts to be completed in a short time and where complex vocabulary and terminology, not to mention complex regulations relating to privacy and information sharing are prevalent. 

For example, SpeakWrite, one of the most respected freelance transcription services in the marketplace, won’t consider hiring someone for legal or medical transcription with less than a year’s experience. What’s more, due to the sensitivity of the information being handled, as well as a typing test (60 words per minute and 90% accuracy minimum) you have to pass a background check. However, a medical or legal transcriptionist can earn up to $3,000 a month.

Transcriptionists, regardless of expertise level are expected to understand and follow a style guide and each piece is judged on accuracy. The higher your accuracy, the more work you will be offered.

3. Data entry

Likewise, to succeed you will need to be a good communicator, be comfortable with executing repetitive tasks and be well organized.

Unfortunately, while data entry is a business-critical operation, the professional skills needed to fulfill many data entry operations mean that potentially anyone who’s computer literate can do the job. For this reason, competition for data entry roles is fierce and pay is low – it’s not unusual to wait for up to a year to win that first job.

Training should be covered on-the-job and, with the exception of a foot pedal for transcription services, a legitimate company offering a legitimate position will not ask you to pay for expensive equipment or software.
